I recently changed the update settings to manual because i kept having to restart my laptop about 3 times a day (it was getting really annoying).now, i am trying to manually install 6 important and two recommended updates, and after about 5 minutes of installing it keeps saying that it failed and code 646 saying it was an unknown error. So then i checked my update history it turned out that about 2 months ago the updates started failing, and since then only about 10 updates out of the like billions it tried to do were successful. so i ran the windows defender scan, and the McAfee scan and it found nothing. i tried installing the updates about 10 times, (one time my computer spontaneously decided to restart and configure, it didnt even ask me!), i troubleshooted, ect. and now ive run out of ideas. what should i do?
thanks =]

I have been getting error code 646 for my updates as well since 2 days ago, so I finally got on the Microsoft support site this morning, and this procedure immediately resolved it for me just now:

For Windows 7 and Windows Vista users:

1. Click Start, and then in the Start Search box, type regedit.

2. In the Programs list, right-click Regedit.exe, and then click Run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.

3. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:

HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders

4. In the details pane of Registry Editor, locate AppData. The value of this key should be %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming.

5. If the value is not set to %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming, right-click AppData in the details pane, and then click Modify.

6. Enter %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming into the Value data box, and then click OK.

7. Close Registry Editor.

8. Try to install the update again. If the problem persists, repeat these steps but use the following registry subkeys instead of the subkey that is specified in step 3:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders

Windows is always failing. The reason for this particular fail is due to Microsoft releasing buggy updates.

Delete the windows update software files using PureRa (http://download.cnet.com/PureRa/3000-2094_4-10885456.html) - Select 'windows update installation files', and then delete. Reboot your machine & try the updates again.
