Question:
Windows XP question?

Okay,

I was recently having some trouble with some files missing from XP and was able to fix except a new problem occured, that isn't really a problem. I'm getting the "Please select the operating system to start" screen when I boot up. There are two of them, one is named "y" and the other is "Windows XP". They both goto the same Windows XP. It seems to me that I may have installed a second copy when I was fixing the earlier problem.
I was wondering how I unstall one of these, or some other way, so the "Please select the operating system to start" screen doesn't appear anymore.

Thanks

Click on Start button

Select Run

Type in: msconfig

In the window that opens click on the boot.ini tab

You will see the information your computer is using to display the selection menu under the [operating systems]

Do a "Check all boot paths" and it should show you which entry is wrong

Delete the entry from the c:\boot.ini file

Yes. The Boot.ini has an extra line and now allows user a choice to select different operating system as in the case with dual boot or triple boot.

If you can enable the hidden file, doubleclick the Boot.ini in C:\ or root directory to amend the file, The other way is to navigate to the "System Property" Page (or Start>Run and at dropdown box, enter "sysdm.cpl" (without quotes). After that select the "Advance" Tab. In the new page, click "Setting" under "Startup and Recovery Section". In the next page, click Edit.

Make sure that you have the correct amendment because a mistake made would make XP fail to start. One should only find the following text:

[boot loader]

timeout=31

default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS

[operating systems]

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn

(Note: Some character got trancated due to the Yahoo Answer editor. copy exact from other computer

Amend to above if your copy of XP is of the standard installation. Good to make a copy of the existing Boot.ini and replace the amended file just in case you fail to start up.

hello you ok ?

basically what it sounds like you have done to me is setup a dual boot configuration.

what this means is that when you or who ever reloaded the operating system xp was installed twice.

dont worry its something thats very easily done even i have done this in the past and be a bit stumbled.

if you cant manage to remove the 2nd system thats on your system there is another way !.

i will post a link below for you with the information.

http://www.blackviper.com/Articles/OS/fdisk/fdisk1.htm

[ this is the fdisk utility in windows 98 second edition]

you can use the above utility to remove the other partition that you dont want on your computer !.

there has to be very extreme caution taken if your going to attempt to try this method iam talking about.

i mean you dont want to remove the wrong partition did you !

or if you dont feel too sure you could save all your files and just format the computer again.

then the option to delete the partions will be highlighted with a current formatting if its taking place.

i hope this information is usefull and helps you out.

happy computing everyone.

Take a look at the boot.ini file (c:\boot.ini). Its a hidden system system file, so you may need to enable viewing system and hidden files. If there are two operating system choices listed, you should be able to comment out one of them. Just make sure the default points to the one you want.

Oh, and be sure to make a copy of the boot.ini file in case something screws up. Or run SystemRestore to create a check point before modifying anything.

Go to your start menu,

select Run,

type in "msconfig"

A window will open up.

Go to the boot tab.

Select Windows XP as default boot OS, and make sure that this "Y" thing is deleted from there...

After that, click okay, then restart.

Hope that works for you!

Hey, similar thing happned to me last month and I saw this on a thread and it worked for me, but mine was aksing me to choose between two win XPs nothing that said 'y', may work for you

Right click mycomputer/ ,properties/advanced ,Startup and recovery/settings /uncheck time to display operation system to get rid of the choice, or set it to 5 to give you a chance to choose one OS or The other .
