I know that if you put more than one column of gadgets into the sidebar, you can move between columns, but is there a way to widen the sidebar so you can view more than one column of gadgets at once?

You can't actually widen the side bar but what you can do if you want (though I personally like to take up as little space as possible on the desktop) is to loosen your gadgets from the side bar. For instance, I use the notes and when positioned on the sidebar they are small, but if you move to the left of the bar it expands so you can see more lines. Hope this helps.

No, BUT I would suggest downloading a different sidebar instead. Google have an alternate sidebar with Google Desktop; with many more gadgets (and more functional); and theres also the Desktop Sidebar ( http://www.desktopsidebar.com ) which also has many many gadgets and options (my personal favourite).
