It depends on how you want to use it, really.

Gnome is slimmer and very popular. It has some good add-ons and seems to have better accessibility features. That said, I haven't used it much.

KDE is a very richly featured option with a host of KDE-specific software to handle all sorts of different tasks. It's accessibility support is a little thin, but the new features of the latest versions are very sleek. I know a lot of people have had sub-par experiences with it, but under my openSUSE 11.1 and 11.2 it's worked like a dream.

Then again, if you have a low-end machine like an old laptop or very old PC, you might be better off with xfce. It's highly customisable and extremely light. It doesn't have the rich features of the more popular DEs, but many swear by it.

Kubuntu 13.10 (KDE) has come a long way, even since the very popular 12.04. it has Konsol 4.2 and uses the monstrous MUON repository. it can get desktop fancy because the default is Dolphin which lets you resize icons individually, have up to six desktops (not at once) a slew of the coolest wallpapers ever and is quick. But it takes up 5.4GB of your HD. Ican't get it to WINE, but I think it can, but not as well as Mint 15 MATE (Gnome) which is my favorite Gnome. Its nothing like Gnome. the add ons are difficult to deal with, but that is due to my inexperiience and I've accidentally found all sorts of quirky things to delight me. There's no 13.10 manual and the guide is paltry. I just use the KDE book. Konsole is the Terminal emulator that makes Terminal look sick. It takes commands and root structure with ease. Caution: Don't mess with Konsole or you can wreck the system very easily. Konsole is deceptively easy and that is why I really like Terminal better. They are not the same thing. KDE is no harder to program than Gnome, just a bit different and I think more fun. Gnome love Python and so do I. KDE loves it, too. But it loves C++ and seems to have an afftinity for Ruby on Rails. (Ruby is easy at first, then gets montsrously hard later if you let it get too complicated. I like Python right now.) The edge, to me, goes to KDE because its develpment is so fierce and it is not afraid to run the bleeding edge. Gnomes want to be popular and comfortable and to replace Windows, which I want it badly to do in spades. the KDE community act like a family of pioneers kind of like the Starship Enterprise and its wild crew. but its full of Data's, Scotty's and Spocks and i can't find Captain Jean Luc Picard or Jim Kirk. So far I'm in the lounge and playing with my Sorian brandy. if you want to Windows, stay with Gnome. If you want to go where no one has gone before, we'll pipe you aboard the KDE ship. Oh, right now Open SuSe is the winner followed by Slackware and Kubuntu. And they are, of course, free. Don't foprget to buy some of their superior commercial software, at least one of which is 'de rigeur' for KDE.

I have tried KDE on several occasions was impressed with KDE 3.5 but KDE 4 no matter which release seems a little unfinished to work with along a good few bugs thrown in for good measure

GNOME easy to navigate without the gimmicks. Solid Reliable. What more can I say.

My vote most certainly goes to GNOME

OpenSUSE 11.2 certainly seems to be a classy act however personally I would go with Linux Mint

I thoroughly recommend Linux Mint 8 Main Edition which is built upon Ubuntu 9.10 Its easy to install and easy to use plus it comes with much of the software you are likely to need preinstalled

Linux Mint 8 Download

The Perfect Desktop - Linux Mint 8 (Helena)

You download the ISO. image of Linux Mint 8 then you need to create a Bootable LiveCD for installation

Linux Mint 8 can also be run direct from the LiveCD from Booting up without touching your Hard Drive

There is no better than another, your best bet should be trying both of them. Each of them have their advantages and disadvantages.

I could be here talking about the pros and cons about each of them, but it will be based on my personal point of view which is not really important for you. Go get some information at the Gnome project page:

http://www.gnome.org/

...and the KDE page:

http://www.kde.org/

Also I recommend you checking out Ubuntu 9.10 which includes both of them and an Ubuntu "Application Center" to install easily all your softwares and games at one place.

Personally, for simplicity go with Gnome, for Eye candy and special stuff go with KDE but again; my point of view.

Hope it helped!

OpenSUSE is the best Linux distro in my opinion.

I would suggest KDE is better but you should try both. KDE is more modern in my opinion.

i bet u must be using gnome on ubuntu... both kde and gnome are desktop environment on linux... kde i s more smooth ... gnome more supprted n old.... u must be having kde on ubuntu... If u r looking for good linux distro... i'll recomend opensuse .... have tried fedora, ubuntu, opensuse etc and opensuse is best... Personaly, i am using Gentoo but probably u wont be able to compile that... so just try opensuse... its free and robust... supports almost all hardwares

I've tried both and I prefer gnome. I think it's just personal preference and familiarity. Try both and use whichever one you like.
