Question:
How do I put a circle around Japanese characters in MS Word or OpenOffice?

I'm trying to write a document in MS Word in Japanese. For formatting and legibility, I would like to put a circle around the part of speech character. My colleagues with the Japanese version of MS Word already have it as an option, but since I'm running the American version, I don't have that option. Writing in Japanese is not a problem - this is the only formatting issue I've had. Information for either MS Word or OpenOffice would work. Please let me know if you need more details to help me out! Thanks!

I'm not 100% sure which character you are looking to insert, but one thing you might try is to choose the "Insert" menu and then select "Symbol". This brings up a window in which you can select specific characters to insert. Choose a Japanese font, such as MS Mincho and then scroll through the choices until you see the character that you want.

There are many choices of circled character, such as numbers ㊄, days of the week ㊊, corporate abbreviations ㊑, directions ㊤, etc., but I don't see any for the parts-of-speech. However, take a look and see if what you want is there.

If you aren't talking about a circled font character, but instead are looking for a way to encircle any random character (sort of like underlining or italicizing), I don't know a simple way to do that. One option is to draw a circle with the drawing menu, and then add text to the circle. It's a little clunky, but would definitely work for diagrams and the like.

Perhaps the simplest solution might be to take a document that your colleague authored and copy out the symbols you want to use in your own document. Save them to a clipboard, and then use that when you write your document. Not very elegant, but it would probably work.

Good luck!

Following is a way to put a circle shape in MS Word (Japanese version)

If you use "Auto-shape" , you can put circles in MS Word (Japanese version).

1. Drawing a circle;

Go the Menu Bar located in the top, choose 挿入, insert (I) ----->図, picture (P) ------> オートシェイプ,autoshape (A).

On the Autoshape window panel,

click 基本図形, basic shapes, and then choose the circle (oval shape) picture .

2. Changing the format of the circle shape so that texts behind the circle shape (made in Auto-shape) become visible.

After you draw a circle, click the the left hand side of button on your Mouse to select the circle you have just drawn.

Go Menu bar on the MSWords, and choose 書式,format (O)----->

オートシェイプ, autoshape (O)------> on the window panel of 色と線, colours and lines of オートシェイプAutoshape, change 0% in 透過性 (T)transparency to "100%"

In MS Words there are other ways to draw an circle by using Autoshape as well.

Ruthie Baby is Correct! Courier New is a monospace font meaning all of the characters occupy the same widith. Letter spacing is font-specific, rather than software dependent. Even if you edit Font > Spacing, it will still be variably spaced because the letters themselves are different widths. However, the more spread-out the letters are, the less noticeable variation in actual character width will appear to the eye. If there is a particular effect or result your are attempting to achieve -- there may be other ways to do it, than a monospace font.
