Drive Wiper in Ccleaner will overwrite the free space on drive. Deleted files will not be recoverable. You don't need to do 15 passes. One pass is enough unless you are expecting the FBI to take your computer and spend hours and hours trying to recover little scraps of data here and there and trying to make sense them.

Data on a hard drive is recoverable until it is overwritten by new data. When a file is deleted by the operating system all the data is still there, the space it's on is just marked as free space available for new files/data. Deleted files that have been overwritten by new files are not recoverable or only partially recoverable depending on how much of the file has been overwritten.

Yes, have it wipe the free space on your HDD, and set it to overwrite at least 15 times.

Recovery software can only recover information that has not been overwritten with new information.

You don't need a sledgehammer, you just need to throw it down hard as you can at a hard surface. Or if you want to do it in a more proper manner, download and burn DBAN and burn it to a cd or dvd and boot the computer from that. (If its even possible on that computer.)
