Why does Microsoft Word get really slow and laggie if you leave it open?

Yet, when you are actively using it for the same amount of time, it doesn't get slow? Seems counterintuitive. You would think, if anything, actively using a program rather than opening it and then leaving it alone would actually cause it to be more laggie by comparison but it's actually the other way around! Any techies know what's up with this?

For versions of Word older than 2003, there was a noticeable memory leak which caused the program to lag after a few hours of use, but it's easy to fix if you just close the program and reopen it.



The more important question is how long are you trying to leave it open?
