I need some help with the Windows 98SE Startup!?
2012-07-19 07:42:34 UTC
I have installed Windows 98SE on my PC from 2004 (Think its from that year, going to use it for MC server anyway) Everything worked well, but when i came to the Startup with something went wrong:

Microsoft Windows 98 Startup Menu
============================

1. Normal
2. Logged (\BOOTLOG.TXT)
3. Safe mode
4. Step-by-step confirmation
5. Command prompt only
6. Safe mode command prompt only

Enter a choice: 3

Warning: Windows did not finish loading on the previous attempt.
Choose Safe mode, to start Windows with a minimal set of drivers.

F5=Safe mode Shift+F5=Command prompt Shift+F8=Step-by-step confirmation [N]

I choosed both Safe mode and Normal, but when i do that i come to this:

(Big orange text)
It's now safe to turn off you computer.

I have tried to restart the PC some times but nothing happens.. i come to this all the time, what should i do? :(

First of all is Windows 98SE supported on your hardware; are there drivers for Windows 98SE offered? If not, then the chance that it will ever work is very small. Verify this first before you spend more time on this. As a next step I would say reinstall your computer and try again, using the proper drivers for your chipset and such. Keep in mind that Windows 98SE is no longer supported and a huge security risk when connected in any way to the internet.

How much memory have you got installed in it? Windows 98SE can't handle more than 1GB without becoming unstable or crashing.

If you only want it to be a Minecraft server then you'd be better off installing one of the lighter Linux distros on it, such as Puppy Linux: http://puppylinux.org/main/Overview%20and%20Getting%20Started.htm

Because the Minecraft server is a Java program you can run it in Windows, Linux or MacOS. Windows 98SE can't use the latest versions of Java either.

EDIT: Use the latest version of Puppy Linux or whatever other Linux you decide to use. Ubuntu is now on version 12.04 so 4.10 is no longer supported and hasn't been for a long time.

It's probably because your operating system of choice is 14 years old.
