I've got VMware server running fine on 7.10. There are a few tutorials out there if you google them. The one I used is listed below, the only thing I did different was I didn't install the patch they have listed.

I've also installed vmware server by adding "deb http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu feisty-commercial main" to the software sources and used the synaptic package manager to install vmware server. I've only done that to install vmware server and deleted that the software source after I was done to avoid any other problems with updates.

Another option I've used is to install vmware player (under Applications > Add/Remove...) then build the xp vmware machine on another computer and copy it over.

woo.... ok..... in the beginning there would not have been any reason you had to burn it to a actual disc first with the intention to apply it in a digital computing gadget. the digital computing gadget could have been waiting to mount the image report and use that rather. 2d, in case you have chose to get the completed advantages of ubuntu then you certainly would desire to place in it thoroughly. working it off the CD permits you to do lots of stuff in spite of the undeniable fact that it is not one hundred% like working it put in. the main recent version is 10. version 8 is extraordinarily old at this factor.

I haven't tried this one yet on Linux, but it works well with Windows as the host, and says it supports Windows, Mac and Linux as hosts.
