MS-Word is not a document exchange format.
Save As> HTML or PDF are fine (I think for PDF in MS Word, you send it to 'printer' and select 'PDF printer' or something - to export a PDF file)
Sending .doc files is a bad idea for many reasons - Firstly, '.doc' format makes files huge compared to any other format.(see links below)
They'll be opened on another system, maybe with a different version or kind of software. There's no way of knowing how it is going to print out on another printer or system either...
Microsoft Word files are a security hazard - Unlike standard data formats, Word files can contain programming code which can be executed by your computer automatically when the document is opened. Microsoft's motivation for including this "feature" in Word was to allow word processing macros to be saved along with the document. However, it was not long before malicious people began exploiting this design flaw by writing Word macro code to surreptitiously delete random files or otherwise damage one's computer. As a result, Word files are now notorious as the vector for dozens of computer viruses. When you receive a Word attachment by e-mail, do you really want to take the risk of welcoming a proverbial (and in computing terms, literal) Trojan horse into your system?
I think you should send files in PDF format - or Open Document format. It is not right to assume that everyone uses Windows, or wishes to be compatible with Windows (although it's fairly easy to open .doc files, I do refuse on principal - it is part of the Microsoft Antitrust bully tactics - they threaten anyone developing software capable of opening .doc or .docx files).
Export as PDF. In future, you could use Open Office - it has a nice friendly 'pdf' flag on the top corner that exports your files for sending, whilst you keep a local copy for editing.
