I've tried installing a new version of the windows installer and unregistering and re-registering the service but nothing works. I have also made sure the Windows Installer Service is started in XP and on Automatic start.

Can anyone help?

Thanks.

Why bother with XP there are no more updates as from 2011 and obsolete in 2012. Go for Windows 7 and Firefox.
