Question:
Is there a difference in preinstalled applications between Ubuntu and Kubuntu?

I believe that Ubuntu comes with Mozilla Firefox, the GIMP, and several other apps, while Kubuntu has Konquerer, OpenOffice Drawer, and barely any software.

However, the last time I used Ubuntu, it was Feisty Fawn 7.04, so it's like comparing a brand-new Lexus to a 12 year old Chevrolet Cavalier.

Yes Kubuntu has a different software package on the CD, but that doesn't mean all the same software isn't available for it just the same as Ubuntu. (It is!) The main difference is it comes with the KDE desktop environment over Ubuntu's Gnome. Which is basically just the look and feel of the general GUI.

Comparing a brand-new Lexus to a 12 year old Chevrolet Cavalier : No. That's like comparing Linux to Windows.

Windows comes with nothing really but a base OS on it's install CDs. You still have to install everything separately. Luckily with all Linux Distro's including Ubuntu/Kubuntu, there's an easy one stop application where you can choose to install thousands upon thousands of packages/applications, for free!

Ubuntu does indeed come with Firefox, Evolution, Rhythmbox, Transmission, Open Office...

Kubuntu has Konquerer, Kmail, Amarok, Ktorrent and Open Office...

Basically Ubuntu mostly used GTK based applications which run more natively in the GNOME environment and Kubuntu mostly uses QT based applications which were designed with KDE in mind.

You can still use GNOME apps in KDE and vice versa however.

And if you install Ubuntu you can get Kubuntu too by installing it through synaptic package manager. You can also install Ubuntu on Kubuntu using adept. Then you can choose which one you use by pressing the Sessions button at the login screen.

In Kubuntu, you can add "Mozilla Firefox, the GIMP, and several other apps" to your heart's content.

That's the beauty of Linux. It is fully customizable and FREE!

To answer your last comment: Get the latest version of both before you compare them, they're free!!!
