How do I select multiple items on my mac?

I used to have a dell, and when I wanted to select multiple multiple things, I would hold down the control button, and click on the things I wanted selected.
For example: when I wanted to upload pictures, instead of having to upload each picture one at a time, I would hold down control, click the ones I wanted, then upload them all at once.
Well......now that I have a mac, that doesn't work. The control button thing isn't working! How do you select more than one thing on a mac!!

The modifier keys are switched on a Mac.

Use the Command/Apple key (the loopy asterisk) in place of the Control key in Windows.

And some of the functionality you use Alt for in Windows, is divided between the Mac Control key or Options/Alt key.

I hold the command key down but it only selects the ones that I click on. How can I click on the first picture then scroll to bottom picture then select all?

Also, I found that if I was in 'Albums' at the top of the page, it did not work. But, when I switched to 'Photos' I was able use the command button and several photos...
