Jennifer: If neither of these solutions work, please edit/add to your question your Windows version AND any error messages you may be receiving when Word crashes. In the meantime, print these directions and try each of these solutions ONE AT A TIME. Test and restart your computer at least twice before going to the next suggested solution.
Solution 1:
- Restart your computer normally.
- Click Start Button > Search > "normal.dotx" (no quotes)
- Re-name the file "normal.bad" (no quotes)
- Restart your computer.
- Open Word and try to use it.
If this works, you can stop here.

Solution 2:
- Restart your computer
- Click Start Button > Windows Update
- When it finishes searching DO NOT update ANYTHING.
- Click Update History
- Look for updates installed 24-48 hours before Word first crashed.
- Note the name/title AND KB number of each update.
- Close Windows Update
- Click Start Button > Control Panel > Add/Delete Programs
- Click Show Hidden (system) updates/hot fixes
- ONE AT A TIME, uninstall any update installed 24-48 hrs before 1st crash).
- After EACH uninstall, restart your computer and try using Word.
- If Word begins to function again, you'll know which update caused the problem.
- Go to microsoft.com and click Support.
- Use the KB###### as the search term. I'm sure you'll see a solution or Hot Fix.
Hope this helps!
