server 2k3 is nice it is faster and more reliable. Itactive directory is a domain administration tool that is useful (when running microsoft domain it is nice to have active directory enabled). Main use would be as a file/print server or as a domain controller for your microsoft domain. It can also be used as a sql server, terminal server, or if you run exchange an email server. It is very versatile

2003 is more secure. It comes with most of the "allow" settings set to "no" by default. You have to specifically allow some permissions that were automatic in 2000. There are other differences as well, but security was their main focus.
