Can you reinstall windows xp using the same registration number?

i just bought a laptop from a family friend. The default system files are in a folder named after the previous owner. in this case the account was named Ace. its bothering me and i want to basically make it like nobody else has ever owned/used it. so unless anyone knows how i can fix that, i need to reinstall windows xp and set it up myself. my question is, can i use the registration number that whoever had this comp before used? am i going to have to buy a new copy of xp?

Depends on what you are looking for. If you just want the other account name to disappear, you can create your own account and log in and delete it via control panel/user accounts. If you want the system to be clean of everything, you can do system restore and/or uninstall any programs.



Of course, if you just want to wipe the harddrive clean and start over, you should be able to do it, provided that you know the product key for the laptop, but be prepared to call up Microsoft and hassle them giving you a new one in case it didn't work. You just can't be sure with the diminishing returns from Microsoft products anymore (not that they ever make the best products anyway)

if you no the product key from the orig user..yes you can. but you ahve to be careful because some laptop manufactures use a special key code for a version of xp that is built for them so that key will not work with a normal version of xp. but if you goto the manufactures website you can get the orig setup disks and solve ur problem

you can use the same numbers to reinstall the operating system ( make sure you have the drivers for everything ) If you dont have the cd you will have to buy one
