No matter how many windows I have open (or how few), when I open a new window its size is
only about one-third of the screen--in the center.

go down on task bar close to clock,,right click and on popup click Cascade windows...then resize your windows to suit yourself

Okay...this is what you do.
Close All Windows - Everything...
Now....Open Just one window ( If it's not proper size/position...that's Okay )
Right click on the task bar ( the one on the bottom with clock at the end )
Select either "Tile Window Horizontally" or "Tile Window Vertically" ...doesn't matter.
Now...You single window, will occupy the full desktop.
Before you do anything else, just close it...Properly ( File=>Close or File=>Exit )
That's it.
Next time you open the window, it should be properly sized and positioned.
Let us know how it all worked out

that may not what's being asked. i'm specific all and sundry understand the thank you to maximise a window. I even have an identical difficulty. once I open in a clean window that's small. I even have maximized it many cases, have replaced the size, it consistently opens as a small window. opt to purpose back?

This might be because the last time you modified your screen size manually (going to the edge and contracting it to that, not hitting the maximize button) you changed it to that. I had this problem once and going back and resizing it helped it get back to the old way it was for me.
