I am trying to enter the Linux world, as I am a beginner, I though it would be better to start from Ubuntu. I need the following stuff if you can help me.

1. Specific websites from where I can download software (such as media players, photo editing software, utilities, messengers) specifically for Ubuntu.

2. Learning websites for Ubuntu.

3. Links for free PDF ebooks for Ubuntu.

I can google it, but I need help from the professionals and people having more experience in this.

Thanks for you help in advance!!!

1. Ubuntu comes with a music player etc out of the box.

To add new apps, just use the Ubuntu Software Centre.

Applications menu> Ubuntu Software Centre

2. Learning websites for Ubuntu

The best ones(IMO)- up-to-date and easy to understand

to start with, this will give you a general overview of Ubuntu suitable for beginners

http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/

then move on to this one once you have Ubuntu up and running for info on specific aspects of Ubuntu.

For detailed info on Ubuntu and further documentation

There are a whole lot more, but these are the ones I recommend to get started on.

For further assistance, you can always try ubuntuforums which has a large and helpful volunteer community who will answer your questions. This thread on Ubuntuforums should help you get started (lots of helpful links like the ones above)

3. Free PDF ebooks

Ubuntu Pocket Guide

Ubuntu Karmic Koala Bible

There's a few more but I think the pocket guide alone should cover everything you need to know as a beginner. It's probably the best of the lot. There are also paid books, you can find them on amazon. Stick with the websites though, they're constantly updated.

If you just installed 9.10, pull down the Applications menu. The bottom choice will be Ubuntu Software Center. Browse in there, and you'll probably find anything you need.

For photo editing, GIMP is already installed, under Applications>Graphics. For a media player, you already have Rhythmbox installed under Applications>Sound & Video, or you might want to try Amarok. (You may need to install media codecs to play your files; go to medibuntu.org and follow their instructions for that.) For IM, you already have Epiphany installed under Applications>Internet, but a lot of people prefer Pidgin. Any of those that are not already installed can be found in the Ubuntu Software Center selection.

A free beginners' guide in PDF format is available at http://www.ubuntupocketguide.com/index_main.html and you can visit the Ubuntu forums at http://ubuntuforums.org for other help from the community.

Congratulations and welcome to Linux. :)

I recommend that you stick to the official repositories, and only use your package manager to download and install software.

Media players - VLC, MPlayer, Totem (with GStreamer codecs)

Photo editing - GIMP

Messengers - Pidgin, Empathy

PDF ebooks - well technically Ubuntu already comes with a PDF reader, so I don't see why you can't continue to use the ones you already do.

Learning websites - Ubuntu Forums, Psychocats, etc.

GetDeb Software Portal for Ubuntu

A vast amount of software included in the Ubuntu package can be used for the purposes you have outlined above

MEDIA PLAYBACK

There are a variety of media players of which I recommend

MPlayer for Video Playback of all formats including mp4. and mkv.

Rhythmbox for Audio Playback (preinstalled)/Use gtkpod for ipod syncing

http://projects.gnome.org/rhythmbox/

http://www.gtkpod.org/about.html

PHOTO EDITING

GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) comes preinstalled

http://docs.gimp.org/2.6/en/

MESSENGER

Pidgin is Ubuntu's default instant messaging (IM) client, at least through 9.04, Jaunty Jackalope. It works for a wide range of protocols, including MSN Messenger, AIM, Yahoo Messenger, Jabber, IRC, IRQ and Gadu-Gadu.

Download and install Linux Mint. It is based on Ubuntu but comes with all the extras so you don't need to install anything.

If you go to the site for java it offers an installer. The system should automate that. All other versions do.
