video file converter?

i recieved 3 dvds of video footage from a recent friend put together from our holiday over in china. Now i want to make a little 3 or 4 minute movie of the best bits myself. But i dont know how to convert the files to from the dvd and save them on my computer to use them in windows movie maker. Any suggestions please?? thank you

I tend to use a free program called "Super" The website is annoying to try to find the actual file to download. Start here http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html



It is worth using though. I have tried other converters but so far I have always come back to this one. You can simply drop the files from the DVD into it, tell it what format you would like "AVI" etc and it will convert what it can and dump what it can't.



No doubt there are a wealth of other programs available and you will have to try them to find which one you prefer. Have a trawl through Sourceforge.net for open source DVD rippers.

To make the files smaller in size but thew same time length you will need to convert them to something like FLB or 3GP.



To edit them and put together all the best bits you will need movie maker which is a feature of windows vista premium.
