Hi,
In general, when I browse homepage of a software, I find details of its mailing lists and newsgroups. What's the conceptual difference between these and their usefulness?

Thanks

Things sent to a mailing list are distributed through email. Things sent to a newsgroup sit on the newsgroup server and wait to be read by news readers.

Its the difference between mailing your Christmas cards to your friends and family versus posting a Christmas poster in the local supermarket.

A mailing list, is just like the name says, a group/list of email adresses, where you send mails to in one click, instead of adding all of the adresses in the "to" field.

Newsgroups you can compare with servers, where all kinds of stuff is posted on, like images, texts, music, movies (last 2 mostly illegal content). You need a newsgroup reader to view them. (outlook express has limited support for viewing newsgroups)

Hope this helps

f you give out you information to a mailing list you will receive regular information about that site you have give your information to.If you subscribe to Usenet (newsgroups) you will be able to choose what group you join and what information you choose to look at.
