I am guessing it's because the Windows NT build is 7.x I give my reason for this because Windows XP is 5.1.x Windows Vista is 6.x so Windows seven must be 7.x Please correct me if i'm wrong
PS: I'm having a debate With a friend why Windows 7 has the seven as its name.

Thats correct, Windows 7 is the 7th version of windows.
(Although it still runs on almost the same kernel as Vista with a few alterations)
It was first codenamed Windows Blackcomb or Windows Vienna. But Microsoft decided to keep the name plain and simple.

Win7 actually uses NT Kernal 6.1. I think it's just the 7th version of Windows meant for consumers, or it might be the 7th OS released with the NT Kernal. I'm not exactly sure.
