For gaming there is XP

For everything else there is Linux

WHY LINUX IS BETTER

I thoroughly recommend Linux Mint 7 Main Edition which is built upon Ubuntu 9.04 Its easy to install and easy to use plus it comes with much of the software you are likely to need preinstalled

You download the ISO. image of Linux Mint 7 then you need to create a Bootable LiveCD for installation

Linux Mint 7 can also be run direct from the LiveCD from Booting up without touching your Hard Drive

ALSO WORTH CONSIDERING LINUX MINT 6

Below is one link of many hits from google.

From my point of view the advantages of linux over windows are:

Free: the operating system is available for no cost. ALL of the linux programs are also free. You will never be harassed about whether you version of linux is authentic. The possibility of getting a computer virus if you follow the linux way of doing things is less than 1%. If you care; the underlying workings of the operating system are transparent to you.

I am not saying that linux is perfect or does not have problems in some areas, but the choice is between 2 imperfect systems, or 3 if you include apple.

The best part is you can try linux for free and see for yourself what you think about the advantages and disadvantages. You cannot try windows or apple for free.

Linux IS different from windows and does take some education to learn how to use it properly. People always forgot how much time they spent learning to use windows.

To correct one of the answers, Linux has a program manager, you do not have to hand install from the console. Linux does have anti virus programs, it has intrusion detection software. You have to know how to get to things and not make illogical statements in general. Linux operating system is not as difficult to work with at the system level like MAC which has a UNIX based system with other systems incorporated to make it human friendly. You may not get some of the fancy eye candy programs that MAC wrote specifically for their computers, but Linux has more than what meets the eye. Linux is not a gaming system type of operating system. Some Windows programs can work with Linux by using a program called Wine, but limited. There are comparable programs for Linux to match some Windows programs. Nothing really matches a MAC, since they write their own programs to work and function only with the hardware they install. Run a few Linux LiveCDs and check it out for yourself. They load to memory and don't touch your current operating system. Get answers from people who know and serious about Linux.

Linux is the best operating system around.

It is more secure ( Virus Free) , generally faster, free (Windows XP costs around £60 roughly).

Linux is more customizable than most other operating systems around. Once you install Linux you become part of the Linux community who will help you in all your needs simply because you use Linux and Linux looks better than Windows and Mac.

Trust me once you use Linux the only time you will ever use Windows is to play PC games. everything else you need Linux provides.

it's free that is about it but read this i just answered a previous and i use this: first of all don't go to Linux it sucks. to install software on linux you have to go though program converter that convert windows games to linux it is a pain in the butt to get install and get your programs to run right and they are not a safe operating system based on viruses and the same goes with apple because they are not a safe operating system either and you cannot run any programs from windows. the reason why linux and apple are not safe is because they don't a anti virus program and anybody could hack into your computer because they are a open source operating system and they and people don't actually spend time making viruses for them because they are too hard to make for but also it is just easier to hack computer hope you listen i have stayed with windows all my life hope you will do the same

There are many advantages.

Download and burn a live cd from ubuntu.com.

You can use it to boot your computer without installing it to try it out.

You can use wubi to dual boot if your not quite ready to let go of windows.

After using my wubi install for a few months, I completely removed windows since I didn't use it anymore(and I know it always gets viruses).

I've been putting linux on machines for my friends, they love it.
