If you can download updates, that means your copy of XP is ok.

If it isn't ok, you get a dialog box, with a count down, asking you to purchase a legal copy direct from Microsoft. (There is also an icon on the toolbar stating much the same.)

My father in law had this problem (we've fixed it now!) but it didn't cause problems with his PC, he just couldn't get updates.

You actually can get updates without having a genuine copy. I don't know how exactly, because I myself have never done this! But I have definitely known of people who had pirated copies of XP and could update just fine.

Normally the way you know if your copy of XP is genuine is by thinking about where it came from. Any computer you buy new that has XP will have a real copy. The only time you'd have reason to think your windows is pirated is if you bought the computer used and it didn't come with any official XP disks. (That could also mean they just lost them...)

The Windows Genuine Advanting notification tool which is a Windows Update thing checks whether your version of windows is legal, so if you've been getting all the updates then you will have got this, and it would have complained if you had an illeagal copy.

So yes, your situation pretty much means that you have a genuine copy of XP.

If you truely want to know go an activate auto updates. eventually it will get to the point it won't do it if isn't. Or you can go to the Microsoft website and it will test it..If this happens your system will start acting weird because the safe guard will keep your current version from updating any other software that runs on XP as well! If you bought the machine with it then it probably is ! If your just trying to find out because you bought a pirated copy and it seems to work for now..be warned by letting your system updated on auto it also sends scripts to Microsoft.!

Actually not there are versions of windows xp which are labeled as preregistered(illegally made) and you don't have to activate them after you install them but when you use this form of windows xp it makes the computer think you have a valid windows xp so you can still install windows update. To truly tell if you have a genuine copy you should refer to the coa sticker that came with your windows xp disk.

If you have downloaded all of the latest updates then chances are that your copy of Windows is indeed genuine. If it weren't one of the latest updates would have let you know otherwise....

if you download it, it will help you to fix some flaw or error in the provious system, that means u are not easy to get hacked or get virus.

how you can find it out?

u can just go control pannel, and windows update, if it says you have new upgrade need to be install, just click it.
