Question:
Is there any decent free registry cleanup software available?

My laptop is dead slow and no matter how many times I run spyware or anti-virus software, or even reformat the hard drive, it still runs slow.

I'm thinking there could be some crap in the registry that needs binning. Any recommendations?

CCleaner is good as most of the other answers will suggest.

site report.

They do a defrager as well but would recommend this instead http://mydefrag.com/

Just don't do the iobit.com.

Adaware, spyware or viruses 5

phishing or other scams 23

Bad shopping experience 1

Rating: Phishing or other scams

alfranatic is the latest sock puppet account being used by IObit to try and hide the "red" reviews from being read by users of siteadvisor. Such behaviour is unacceptable and this site needs to be turned RED. Why would a genuine reviewer spam the review page with 4 "green" reviews in a row unless to try and hide the red reviews which are slightly below it. Shameful tactics!

This company is involved in an ongoing dispute regarding the theft of the malware database more than one other security company. iobit.com have given no credible evidence to refute the claims and have tried to cover up their theft, unsuccessfully, from the online community. Iobit.com is also engaged in the unsavoury practise of using black-hat SEO using porn keywords and other explicit terms in order to trick unsuspecting users into downloading their "products" (search google for iobit.com+porn games to confirm, they tried to remove the page after being exposed). They have also registered a number of "fake" reviews on siteadvisor.com and mywot.com supporting their products in the face of overwhelming public disgust at their actions. Most of the green reviews on this page are fakes.

You can read the allegations here: http://malwarebytes.besttechie.net/2009/11/02/iobit-steals-malwarebytes-intellectual-property/

And more here:

http://news.softpedia.com/news/Malwarebytes-Accuses-IObit-Plays-Dead-126389.shtml

Based on my own careful analysis of the evidence presented by Malwarebytes, I give this site a RED rating and urge SiteAdvisor to protect their users by also rating this site red. The spamming of the comments page by the site owner (and their sock puppet accounts) does them no favours.

PS just thought you should know as i only post green downloads in my answers and if they are green i check.

I doubt it's registry problems. People have made a big deal about registry cleaning but it's not really something that has to be done. You can do a few things to restore your computer. If you don't have a virus or malware scanner, download Microsoft Security Essentials. Update and scan your PC. Delete everything that it finds. If your hard drive is full that can slow your computer as well. Uninstall old programs and games you don't use. Delete video, music, and documents you don't use or need. If you want to keep old files then you should back them up onto a CD/DVD, thumb drive, or another hard drive that doesn't have your OS on it. Run Windows Update to get the latest service packs, drivers, and critical updates. Run Disk Cleanup to get rid of old temp files. Run Disk Defragmenter, select your hard drive, and click the analyze button. If it says you need to defrag then do it. If those don't help then it might be time to nuke it from orbit. Back up your important files and do a restore. Your computer should have either a restore CD or restore partition. This will wipe out everything and return it to the start you had when it was new. The process is different for each brand of computer. You can find the instructions in the user's manual. If you don't have the user's manual then visit the maker's website. Just do a search in their support section for your model number. None of this really takes tech savy. The programs listed will do all the hard work, all you have to do is click through a few dialogs.

I agree with Simon P, registry cleaners are usually rubbish, though having said that I use AWCP, download the free version from www.iobit.com if you want to use one

Good luck in whatever choice you make
