Its is an almost finished software, but it may not be completely perfect. Companies issue this version to find more errors that may he hidden in the Application and to get feed backs from users. When they release this version thousands of users will start using it and they will report the errors and their feed back. Companies use these error reports and feedback to correct errors and make improvements to the software. When thousands of users test the software, it is more likely to find maximum errors (Companies can reduce the money they spend on testing also).

Software development occurs in stages. At the very beginning, there is the Alpha stage (or even "pre-Alpha") where code is unstable, features are being decided and the user interface is still under consideration. Beta stage occurs when the code is relatively stable, the feature set is mostly decided, but bugs are still being worked out. When features are frozen and the code has been determined to be stable, the software becomes a "release candidate." Finally, the software reaches "golden master" where the end product is ready to be burned to disk and shipped.

1.A development status given to a program or application that contains most of the major features, but is not yet complete. Sometimes these versions are released only to a select group of people, or to the general public. The testers are usually expected to report any bugs they encounter or any changes they'd like to see before the final release. This is the second major stage of development following the alpha version, and comes before the release candidate.

its part of the software release lifecycle; which has multiple stages like pre-alpha, alpha, beta, (open or close beta), release candidate, RTM, general availablity etc.,
when software has its features completed, this cycle begins; the aim of this is to test the software from usablity point of view with users, with the aim to reduce any negative impact / feedback from/ to the users; people who are use beta version will most likely be select set of customers, sometimes there may be people who will be willing to test for free or at a price, too. this release will be for select set of customers, thoul

Well ,
Demo = Demonstration [just showing you the product]
