Ok so I've asked this question MANY times and I never got a correct answer. My laptop has been broken ever since September of 2012. Ever since I've had no way of getting past this screen saying "Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem: 1. Insert your Windows installation disc and restart your computer. 2. Choose your language settings, and then click "Next." 3. Click "Repair your computer." If you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance. File: \Boot\BCD
Status: 0xc0000001
Info: An error occurred while attempting to read the boot configuration data.
Enter=Continue Esc=Exit.", ultimately making it so that there is no way into my computer as well.
The thing is, I have no installation disc at all. It never came in the box that came with my laptop and if I were to call Dell they would just tell me to buy another installation disc and I can't afford that and I am not waiting for it to come In the mail for god knows how long.
I really need to figure out a way to get into my computer. If I hit F12 on the start screen and try to go into anything it just redirects me to the page with the same ****. If u could help me with this I'd really appreciate it

M, has a good suggestion. Check the sticker on your laptop and get the exact version of Win7 including 32bit or 64 bit from his link.

Ten burn it to CD using Imgburn's "Write Image File to Disc" option--Use the IMAGE file option. http://forum.imgburn.com/index.php?showtopic=61

Then boot from the disc and at the installation page choose to Repair Your Computer. It will attempt to fix the BCD error.

Alternatively, you can use pendrive123 to put it onto USB and boot from that. In the first step scroll way down the dropdown box and choose Win7 installation disc. Second step browse to the ISO you downloaded. Third step choose your USB drive and tick the box to format it. (Use an empty USB flash or one you don't mind being erased.)

Then boot from the USB and choose to Repair your computer.

Hi.

The message is a "generic windows message" ....

Forget the above....

You have a pre-installed OEM manufacturers version of windows....

( " It never came in the box that came with my laptop" ).

You must run the manufacturers recovery console (Not windows).

Included on your Dell apart from the manufacturers software to create your own factory restore/recovery DVD/CD media (That you should have used ! ) is a recovery partition..

Direct factory restore is possible from the partition ..(No discs needed).

( Unless you created recent user/system configuration backups "Factory" is your only option)

Good luck !!!

To access the recovery partition on your Dell press the hot keys at start up..

1. Power on the computer

2. At the Dell logo, hold the Ctrl key and press the F11 key simultaneously.

2. The Dell PC Restore screen will come up.

3. Select Restore or use the Tab key to highlight it and press Enter.

4. if you wish to continue, click Confirm, or use the Tab key to highlight it and press Enter.

5. When the utility is finished, click Finish, or use the Tab key to highlight it and press Enter.

Alternative Guide for Dimension based Dell products.

Hit F11 to access the boot menu.

Select "Repair my PC" from the menu that follows.

You will boot into an environment with diagnostic and repair tools. Select "Factory Image Restore".

What's your operating system? If it's Windows 7, you can download a copy of the Windows 7 operating system from this site (on another computer) and make a disk of it. It's a .iso file. You'll need a DVD to record it to. Use this as your recovery/installation disc.

Dell computers don't come with installation discs. They have to be ordered separately. I had a Dell desktop built, and requested an installation disc at the time of purchase. The cost was $3. If you want to order one, the phone number is 1-800-357-3355, M-F 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. CST.
