pros - newest windows os, great looking user interface that runs on the video card, some built-in security features.

cons - very memory and processor hungry, requires an expensive video card to perform well (Aero), a lot of XP programs aren't compatible with the security features.

Pros: Great toys like Aero.

A bit more stable than previous Windows.

More features for monitoring the PC,

A bit more secure.

Better Gaming interface (in the future).

Cons: Pricey (all flavours).

The security features. (Watch the MAC commercial)

Less all around applications in Home Basic AND Home Premium than XP Home.

Memory Hog

Need upgraded Hardware for FULL feature running.

Built for the Business World, not for the average home consumer.

Vista is not a OS Home users should go out and get immediately. At least for the first year or two.

To run most of the OS fully, especially the AERO, you need to have the following: 1 GB RAM (2 GB is better), A dual-core CPU (single cores work, but not as flawlessly for all the new features), A Graphics Card with the Windows Display Driver Model (WDDM) compatible and should have at least 128 MB of DDR2 RAM built in. Get more RAM if you can afford the higher priced Card. And, PCIe will be better than AGP. Without the WDDM, the AERO feature may not run. And, AERO is not a feature you can turn on or off yourself (not unless you know how to use the Registry), the OS makes that determination for you at the Install.

PC World.com and CNet.com shows what applications are lost from XP to Vista.

As a PC Professional, I don't advise Vista to home users.

Pros:

It runs some programs that Microsoft decided will only run on Vista (DirectX 10, Halo 2, etc)

It can boot from a flash drive/hybrid drive

Some security benefits (most likely undiscovered vulnerabilities exist though)

Cons:

It's costs more money

It takes more resources

Many programs do not work under Vista

A lot of hardware is unsupported

Basically, there hasn't been a convincing reason to upgrade Windows since Windows 2000 came out. Only artificial MS barriers such as they have with DX 10 and IE 7 hold Windows 2000 from being just as functional as Windows Vista. And Windows 2000 has been tested and patched for far longer, thus more stability, and better protection.

When I installed Windows Vista on my computer, it really slowed my computer down which is a Toshiba Laptop, which has 1 GB of RAM and I bought it around the summer of 2006 and used Vista towards beginning of 2007.

PROS

- nice interface, I personally thought the interface was pretty nice and very smooth

- the widgets/gadgets think on the right side of the desktop was pretty cool and looked pretty cool too -- even though i never really found any use for it

CONS

- vista has pretty high requirements and i think you need a good graphics card to be able to view the aero interface properly

- slows down computer (A LOT), this really annoyed me as I'm sure my laptop is pretty good, there's a windows vista capable sticker on it and it has lots of RAM and its pretty new; i uninstalled vista a few weeks after i installed it and went back to XP

- many programs were incompatible with Vista and I had uninstall almost all the programs I previously had

- there's this thing called 'user account control' where something pop-ups for almost every move you make (mostly when you're adjusting settings or installing/uninstalling programs) asking you to verify that you really want to do it

- the usual shut down function has been switched sleep, so when you think you're shutting down your computer, you're really putting it to sleep (although you can go adjust the settings for what buttons you want to do what)

- one thing i ABSOLUTELY hated so much about vista was the start menu, they redid the start menu so its all one big list with sub lists (like a homework outline how theres a title and then everything belonging in that title/group indents) instead of it going out. some people seemed to like this and maybe its just me but i really felt organized and lost with the new start menu

The pros....hmmm....let me think.....ummm....it is a little more secure....

the cons....

It is alot more annoying....always asking "Are you sure?!"...but you can turn it off...with half of the security in place....

The AERO interface...well....honestly i think it is kinda ugly...I like the Luna interface better (and i really dont like the luna interface)....the only other option is Classic....

It uses a whole lot more of your system resources.....

Serious compatibility issues....

SP1 to fix all of the problems in windows Vista has not been released yet....

it's too early to switch to Vista. Too many people are having problems with it. Wait until they work out the bugs. Ask again in 6 months.

I can, but I don't want to.
