NTFS is a file system similar to FAT and FAT32. It provides a number of benefits in functionality, security, stability, etc. For most computers with Windows XP and up, you will be running on NTFS.

The various file systems affect things such as how large your system can get, how large each file on the system is limited to, etc. I've listed a few sites that will be helpful.

Hope this helps, thanks!

This is the file system developed by microsoft concerning the purposes of security, compression, reliability, protection and larger volume size support. Previously, fat and fat32 dont provide any security, any one command any thing in FAT and FAT32 while NTFS doesnt permit anyone if account created with strong password. It includes also permission features for different level of security. One can encrypts files also on it.

And it is also the good at hard drive volume consistency. For this it using standard transaction logging and recovery techniques. If system shut downs improperly then it doesnt scan everytime at restarting because it proved very well at maintainnig the partition. This is my personal experince too. It is also performing well if your HDD has bad cluster, it will manage them also
