about the safety about the remaining really important files on my computer like photos that i have collected from a long time, upon browsing google i read about some sites that could store photos for me on their servers/drives thereby saving data loss, can you suggest me the best among these services available out there? and please note that i do not want these photos/videos to be public without me approving it.

PS: is there some free software using which i can get back the files that i have shift deleted from my system. the file size is close to 11 GB.
Please answer both the questions. Thank you.

► to get back your file, try Recuva - http://www.piriform.com/recuva. enable "deep search".

► If you just want online storage, I would suggest free service from cloud storage site like Dropbox(2GB) SugarSync(5GB) Google Drive(5GB) or if you already have account with live.com you're entitled to Skydrive(7GB). I myself got 25GB from SkyDrive from their loyalty program in April.

If its purely picture related, register to picture sharing site like imgur.com or min.us, you can upload without limit and basically no one can see your picture unless they have the link.

Also just a friendly advice, set secondary backup for your important stuff to external media(HDD/DVD/VCD) because shits happen whether you're using Windows, Mac, Linux or FreeBSD.

For the most part these are all great answers. The Recuva software , & the EXTERNAL drive ?

That's the way to go. But I do want to give you some advice .

If you don't want "ANYONE" to see what you have, then don't chance an online storage.

Everyday we here of someone or some company selling personal information that people thought was secure.

ALSO, and this is very important:

The longer you wait & the more you use the computer that the files you want to save are on, then the higher the chance you will never see them again.

Ever time you use your computer , you write data to the hard drive.

The hard drive is comprised of sectors & clusters that hold the data. When a file is deleted the hard drives program marks these areas to be overwritten.

Even when you install the recovery software like Recuva, or whatever it may be , you are writing data to the hard drive and there is a high chance you are writing on the clusters that your important file may be on. Time is not on your side, so the sooner the better. And save the data to an external source. Because AGAIN, your taking a chance on writing to a marked sector

Look in here for something suitable:

I found GetDataBack did an excellent job. It has a price tag if you want to get files back and you have to decide if that's worth it. I thought it was worth it for us because the files were irreplaceable and the reason they were lost was because the flash drive ran into trouble before I could make a second copy for safe-keeping. So there was only one place where I could try recovering the files from and that was a failing flash drive.

I've also successfully used Recuva and PC File Inspector and UndeleteMyFiles on other occasions. They weren't able to manage the failing flash drive but they've done a brilliant job on other occasions.

As others have said a external hard drive would be great to safeguard all your important documents and nowadays they are not expensive as once were.

If you are now concerned about the lack of security due to your deleting the file, why not re-install the operating system which would put all those important files back onto your computer.

This is not the answer you're looking for, but a good alternative. If you're really concerned about people possibly seeing your files you could just get an external hard-drive. You can get a good one, 500 MB-2TB, in the range of $50-$100. Even Wal-Mart carries them.

So..

To get for free Recuva you can simply click here http://bitly.com/1qdfHAG

It is a very useful program that allows you to restore deleted files from your computer, USB or from many other devices.

Cheers ;)
