AVG free.Spy-bot search and Destroy,Ad aware SE from Lavasoft.Spyware blaster.Disable or get rid of on board

firewalls Norton etc as these tend to bloat themselves on your system and make it run slowly.

All systems mentioned are free and update free as well

Install CCleaner as well ,it will get rid of any temporary files

and make things run smoothly

I have been using AVG Free Anti Virus on my desktop for the past three years. I installed this software on my laptop as well and it works great. With good protection and it works on Windows XP and Windows Vista operating system. You can download the software version 7.5.484 and it will be a 25.7 MB file.

I have used AVG Anti Virus, Zone Alarm Firewall, Spy-bot Search and Destroy and Ad Aware both spyware killers for years. They are all free for personal use and I have had no trouble with Viruses Trojans etc. AVG does not slow the system down as much as some other products and Zone Alarm allows a lot of personal configuration unlike the Windows Firewall. They can all be downloaded from the following link. http://www.computeractive.co.uk/... On the home page select downloads and then the appropriate category.I also use Windows Defender from the Microsoft site. It is safe to use two anti-spy products but never use more than one A/V as it can cause conflicts. You should run A/V and anti spy weekly. Hope this helps.

AVG is good, totally free and runs using minimal system resources as does ZoneAlarm.

I have used AVG for very good reason, it is one of the only ones that will run from MS-DOS which is something none of the others do, it runs in MS DOS mode for when you get nasty reinfectors, you then can scan and clean viruses before they get anywhere near loading stage... One of the big reasons why I use AVG. Until you hit this situation, you wont appreciate the system and why it can run in DOS, I'M not talking about the MS DOS window but from an MS DOS floppy... Big difference.

Zonealarm has also saved my PC's on many occasions and I have been under full denial of service attacks and ZA has held up, it was as Denial of service attack that got me hacked with Norton firewall, pile of junk that is.

Anit spyware tools also do good jobs, SpywareBlaster from JavaCool, Adaware from Lavasoft.de, Spybot Search & Destroy from PepiMK.

All those items are available for FREE.

You may want to go to http://www.grc.com and get hold og some tools to switch off some of the security holes that often get backdoored on your system and these are services that are not used by home users only Network Admins.

You will be bombarded with other suggestions that I have tried and tested before and TBH they look good, smell good but don't deliver the goodies when needed.

The programmes I suggested all use minimal resources on your PC and come with regular updates for FREE.

I have BETA tested for the last six months every free version of every type of software maintenance. I put them to the test and maybe even risked leaping before looking and taking chances with my computer. Without System Restore, I probably would have lost my hard drive while test running AVG and CLamWin. These suck and the only serious free antivirus is comodo.

All my pc's run AVG for virus detection, if fact it is running a systems check right now!,

A squared, Spybot, Ad AWare for any other forms of malware, and Mail Washer for screening your emails.

I have used the commercial program Norton 2003 but found that it was somewhat slow and parts of it stopped working.

More info on security can be found at the links below.

I've been using AVIRA Anti-VIR Personal Edition Classic for the last 8-9months, which seems to work well.......... daily automatic updates, and doesn't hog system resources.

http://www.free-av.com

You'll also need SPYBOT: Search & Destroy from http://www.safer-networking.org for Anti-Spyware

And Zonealarm Firewall (free edition) to stop hackers + other nasties getting in:

http://www.zonealarm.com/store/content/catalog/products/sku_list_za.jsp?dc=56pus&ctry=GB&lang=en

Or you can have all these done in one (with a small fee) by purchasing ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite:

http://www.zonealarm.com/store/content/catalog/products/sku_list.jsp?dc=56pus&ctry=GB&lang=en

You may also want to consider using Mozilla Firefox + Mozilla Thunderbird as your browser + e-mail software for extra protection...... and they also have the added benefit of being faster + more stable than Internet Explorer + Outlook Express

Go for avast coz it will not slow ur PC . and if u want virus protection @ free of cost than go for AVG free edition . If u want complete virus protection (ant virus + spy) than go for Ma cafe or Norton . I Will suggest for ma cafe coz it will not effect on PC speed . Norton will slightly slow ur PC . If in ur PC there is ur some personal Data and u use Internet regularly than go for good anti spy also . You have good configure so speed of PC will not so effected. But for better result increase ur RAM . On ur PC if ur using some specific software than go for Macafe.

AVG seems to be REALLY good. I don't know how they survive since everyone seems to use to the free version. It's a really good programme! It was first recommended to me by an independent computer store who are wonderful and completely honest. I now have the utility set to run once a day and it locates any sh*t tyring to get into your PC and helps you to get rid of it.

I'm very pleased with "Avast!" (see http://www.avast.com/). It gets a five star rating at CNet.com.

A friend has been using 'AVG' (see http://free.grisoft.com/) for years on a busy PC at the heart of a voluntary organisation and has never been let down by it.
