Question:
Why won't my PC let me install an old (Legal!) version of Photoshop?

I'm just trying to re-install an old version of Photoshop CS. I can just about get to the end, but then get an error message saying "Too many installs" or something to that effect. It's a very old PC, which has been reformatted more times than I care to remember.

These are the things I've tried so far: -

* Doing an advanced uninstall of the version that's on there, using the Adobe software.
* Tried installing to a completely different drive on the PC
* Tried installing to an external hard drive
* Used Reg edit to delete any references to photoshop.

There must be some 'remnants' remaining, as when I try and reinstall Photoshop, my user name is still pre filled in! (God only knows how)

If anyone can offer any advice I'd be really greatful

Which operating system are you using?

I don't think Photoshop CS was ever designed to run on Windows 7 or Vista.

If you can't get it to work, then get GIMP http://www.gimp.org - it can do 99% of the same stuff as Adobe Photoshop. It's certainly more advanced than that old version of Photsohop CS. And it's free, and so are all the updates - forever.

As regards your experience with Adobe support, that's the problem with massive multinational software companies, they take your money and run. They probably don't support that old version any more.

In that case you now need to learn that windows is not the only operating system in the world, that there are other Free operating systems that are far more superior, stable, secure, faster and up to date, August 2012. that will run on old computers with 512 megabytes of ram faster than any computer running windows 7,

How do I know? I multi boot many alternative operating systems (4) from 4 gig usb flash drive. I test them out on a old 486 2000 computer they run with no problems, Not only are the operating systems Free so are the application software packages, All 40,500 of them,

I think you may already have newer version of PS installed. PS does not allow two different version installed in a single laptop.

You could try using a "System Mechanic" type prog to clean any Widows or Orphans, temp files etc. and manually delete any PS folders/subfolders that are left after an uninstall. It obviously has left something behind to be able to autofill your name.
