Sections are used to give different parts of a document different layouts: portrait versus landscape, margins, headers and footers, page numbering and others. For instance, a Table of Contents will often be in a separate section in order to use Roman numerals for its own page numbering. An appendix will often be in a separate section to have different headers and footers.

In this case, different page numbering was used, as the message indicates.

The 7/9 means page seven of nine for the total file.

Hope that helps.

Section is a type of block separator in Word.

There are 4 types of Sections

Next Page

Continuous

Even Page

Odd Page

They are used to allow for different definitions and behaviours for margins, page setup, header/footers etc.

Change your Word document to Normal View and you will see where and what Sections have been embedded in your document.

Whoever wrote the document split it into sections - like chapters. Hit the funny button in the toolbar that looks a bit like a 'P' and it will show you all formatting. You'll see the section breaks there. Each 'section' can be formatted differently, like page size and stuff - this is why it is done.
