WINDOWS 98 - The heir apparent to Windows 95, Windows 95 was released in mid-1998. Originally it was called Memphis, and then Windows 97, but Microsoft changed the name when it realized that it was going to miss its target 1997 release date. Windows 98 offers support for a number of new technologies, including FAT32, AGP, MMX, USB, DVD and ACPI. Its most visible feature, though, is the Active Desktop, which internet explorer with the operating system.

WINDOWS XP - An upgraded client version of Windows 2000, Windows XP provides numerous changes to the user interface, including the Start menu, Taskbar and control panels. XP adds improved support for gaming, digital photography, instant messaging and wireless networking. XP Home Edition is designed for the consumer, and XP Professional is aimed at the office worker with added security and administrative options. XP supports the ClearType display technology for improved sharpness on LCD screens.

HUGE Difference!

98 is basically a 32 bit shell on a 16 bit operating system - basically what Windows 3.1 is. Many graphics benchmark tools will show that graphics under 98 performed VERY poorly compared even to Windows NT 4.0.

XP is based on Windows NT technology - it's a redesign of the core part of the system and provides for better preemptive multitasking where 9x didn't do that in all cases.

You can get an idea of the feature differences with this link:

The big difference is the format. 98 uses Fat file format XP uses NTFS. XP uses a very much more secure format and has a lot less crashing going on. The look asthetically is more streamlined. Admittedly 98 is the system that hackers preferred to have on their own systems as it is a lot more secure than XP against intrusion but since the advent of service packs 2 and 3 it is now very much more secure. Bill gates halted production of patches from 98, 98SE, MIllennium, on July 11th this year, online resources will be available until at least 2007 but after that users of the older systems will have to rely on friends or enter a question in a search engine for amateur support for problems.

domicile windows ninety 8 remains based in the previous DOS (text textile purely) working equipment. particularly, it could nevertheless do only approximately something which you particularly prefer to do with a working laptop or computing device - only as with out postpone (if not quicker) than extra contemporary working structures. There are those that swear by making use of it, specially using fact it takes so little supplies to run. the only genuine downside is that new hardware would possibly not have drivers for it - however human beings can in many cases ascertain strategies of becoming it artwork. domicile windows XP (and domicile windows 2000) are in accordance with domicile windows NT - which replaced right into a much extra stable O/S used for community servers, etc. It has exceedingly lots grow to be the generic - and as quickly as they got here out with provider %. 2, it does not look to have any intense issues. Now they have released domicile windows Vista, which has some new features, yet does not particularly provide you somewhat some income. My new laptop got here loaded with Vista domicile top classification, and so a strategies it style of feels to artwork large. this is a 32 bit O/S so winXP drivers will nevertheless artwork with it. Now, and exceedingly lots continuously, maximum peoples lawsuits approximately any version of domicile windows comes all the way down to somewhat some person errors, or blaming the O/S, whilst yet another software is at fault.

Most important difference: Windows 98 doesn't send little mails to Bill Gates telling him what you have on your pc.... Seriously! Of course, xp seems much easier to handle, that's why a lot of people have it. So Microsoft has got the power over a lot of pc's... 98 is of course slower, I would recommend Windows 2000.

There are a number of obvious differences that I can highlight:

1) With respect to Windows 98: an announcement was made in December 2003 that Windows 98 will no longer be supported by Microsoft. That means if there is a serious operating system exploit discovered (and hackers are able to penetrate your system over the Internet, for example), Microsoft may or may not release a fix for it -- depending on the severity. After the initial "End of Life" announcement, Microsoft extended "paid incident support" for Win98 until June 2006, but new hotfixes won't be available. A hotfix is a "patch" used to fix serious problems (such as exploits often used by hackers). To quote: " Paid incident support is now available through 30-Jun-2006. Extended hotfix support for Windows 98 and Windows 98 Second Edition ended on 30-Jun-2003. " (Source: microsoft.com)

2) With respect to security, Windows XP is far more secure than Windows 98. Windows XP is also one of the most current versions of Windows, which also means that it is also supported by Microsoft. Having said that, if there is a security exploit discovered in XP, it is usually addressed / corrected by Microsoft within a reasonable amount of time.

3) If your computer can run Win98, it may not be able to run Windows XP at an efficient speed. Windows XP overhead is about 2x or 3x more than Windows 98. For all intents and purposes: if your computer is more than 5 years old, it may or may not be able to run WinXP. It depends on: how fast the processor is (greater than 500 MHz recommended for WinXP), how much RAM you have (greater than 256 meg recommended for WinXP), and how much hard drive space you have (greater than 10 gigabytes recommended for WinXP).

4) As for Windows ME: it runs on the same technology of Windows 95 and 98. Windows ME is not as popular as Windows 98 and it has been said that ME has greater incompatibility issues. Windows NT, 2000, and XP all use the same technology for their core functions (also known as the operating system "kernel"). That being said, all future releases of Windows will incorporate the NT technology. It would therefore be a waste of time to upgrade to Windows ME..

The biggest difference is that XP has had no less than 600 security issues and there is still more to come. As with all Microsoft garbage it was made to sell and to hell with the consumer

Windows Xp - much reliable, efficient, more interactivity. Programs installed are well-managed, registration of each program no longer need to restart everytime.

Windows 98 - best setup when dealing with games. a little bit slower in terms of efficiency. programs always need to restart every installation.

There are some big cosmetic differences.

Windows XP is virtually free of its ancesteral DOS origins--although it is stull built in for backwards compatability.

XP is more stable and faster.

It is also compatible with more peripherals. Has more mult-media functionability.
