word - changing it back to default settings?

i have a document which has had various page and font settings changed. the document is a template. i need to change the layout back to word's default settings so it is easier to manage but i'm having trouble trying to do this.

i can't just use another document, because the template is set up within the database. just wondering if anyone knows how to change everything back to default?

You need to either change the name of, or delete, the normal.dot file that's stored here:



C:\Documents and Settings \ user name \ Application Data \ Microsoft \ Templates



Restart Word and it will recompile normal.dot using the default settings.

Assuming you are pre 2007, the easiest option would be to open Word then, with the blank document that appears and which is formatted to the current Normal template Go into File, Page Set Up, change your margins to 2.54 top and bottom but whereas the default settings were originally 3.17 left and right I would advise keeping them at 2.54 (1") all round and making sure the page (Layout tab) is set to A4 rather than letter, go to Format on the to font (not using the icons on the toolbar) change to Times New Roman, 12 and hit the default button. Finally, click on the save icon name the file Normal, but before hitting the save button or using the Enter key, change the file type from doc to Document Template. YOu will probably get the message, do you want to overwrite existing template, and you will say yes.

But in fact, I don't think you even need bother with saving as a template, just change page margins, font etc and save as default and any new documents you want to create will come in with new settings.
