I am trying to format numbers as specific text in Excel. For example I want the number 1 to appear as "apples", 2 to appear as "bananas", etc...

I could do this with find and replace but I want to keep the underlying cell value so I can use it for calculations and conditional formats.

I've tried to use the following custom format [=1]"Apples";[=2]"Bananas";General but this only seems to work for up to three arguments and I have five values I need to appear as text

I could set up a separate table and use the lookup function but I'd prefer not to use this approach as the numbers are in a pivot table and as I select different pivot table options it may change size

Any suggestions would be welcome

If custom format (as above) only allows 2 options, construct a second & third format using 3, 4 & 5 option then conditional format the cell with all 3 rules. Only works with 2007 and above as you cannot select number formats pre 2007.
