Where did you get the suspect Excel file?

If from the web, sometimes Excel files are improperly uploaded and end up with the wrong extension. Do you trust the source?

Is it from a Mac? Extensions are optional on Macs and one can accidently change myFile.xls to myFile.xlc or something like that.

What is the file name, including extension?

My inclination would be to open the file, open a new workbook, copy/paste the data from the original to the new and save the new.

If the warning message came up that the workbook contained macros, I would not enable them unless I a)really trusted the source or b) had inspected the file after opening it with macros disabled.

either your using a old version of excel on your computer (download a viewer from Microsoft) or your spreadsheet is toast.
