I am planning to use a windows computer (Dell Inspiron 6400) which I must use for the summer, until August 28th. Could somebody give me an informed opinion on weather I should use Vista or Windows 7? I am planning to bring the install CD for both with me, should anything go wrong.

I'd personally use the Windows 7 Release Candidate, but I'd also backup critical info and files more often than usual just in case.

If you're using any unusual hardware or software, I might be a little more hesitant to use it, as it's still in testing phases and could have compatibility issues.

Since Windows 7 is in RC, this means that I MAY be ready for official release. But there is still quite a few bugs found in Windows 7 - one is copying files which is quite slow, like copying files on a Vista computer.

You may choose between the two, Windows 7 is pretty stable now, but not recommended to use as a primary OS. Windows Vista, on the other hand, gives more support for most laptops and computers, but it is more slow than Windows 7.

You should get Windows Vista instead since Windows 7 is still in its RC stage. Windows 7 is better than Vista but slightly according to some analysts. If that is the case, then stick to Vista. Besides, a lot of programs are working great with Vista and the problems experienced in the past are almost being repaired with service pack updates.
