The program you installed should be in your programs menu, it should be fairly easy to find if you know the name of the program you installed. If it doesn't appear, try logging off and logging on again, this will force the menu configuration to reload.

--Edit, additional info:

Sorry, now I've checked it's called 'Applications' and not programs. Have a look at this screenshot:

There are three menus at the top of the screen, applications is the first one. If you don't have something that looks like that you may need to add the application menu back in. Right click on the panel and select add item, then look for something like application menu or ubuntu menu (I can't remember exactly what it's called, sorry).

I'm guessing you are using Ubuntu (Gnome). If not, this may not apply.

First, try to restart the gnome-panel and the menu should refresh.

In a terminal, type "sudo killall gnome-panel".

Then check your menu again.

If it's still not there, use the Alacarte menu editor (assuming you using 6.10 Edgy Eft, if not there should be a menu editor available for previous versions as well). When adding a new entry, it'll ask for the execution command. The command to put would probably be "/usr/bin/program_name". You may need to refresh your menu again.

If that doesn't work, go back to Synaptic, go to the properties of the program you installed, there should be a tab called "Installed Files". Look for something that says /usr/bin/... and change your menu entry accordingly.

You did not say which kernel or distro or release it is, I guess it is 6.10Dapper,Edgy or 7.04 Feisty.

Also Gnome or KDE. it makes a little difference.

After you run Synaptic and download.install make , reboot.

It works okay, make a backup, that is any OS, Linux makes it easy.

Have Fun!
