My friend had installed MBAM (Malwarebytes Anti-Malware) on her PC and ran a scan. MBAM told her that she had 6 malwares on her PC. It must be noted that MSE was active during this MBAM scan (So there are ample chances of conflicts which may have prompted MBAM to give false positive signals about Malware). My friend insist that even till yesterday MSE never detected any Malwares on her PC. MBAM asked if it could clean the 6 Malwares it found. She choose "Clean" and then she was asked to reboot. After reboot her Windows XP Professional Edition (which came preinstalled on her laptop and she doesn't have any installation set) didn't boot properly and she couldn't see Taskbar and Start Button and was not able to access any Programs installed on her PC. Even as regards the Icons on her Desktop some programs ran after double clicking and some didn't. When she tried to run MBAM again it was not running itself. And it is precisely for this reason why my Friend felt that MBAM itself was a Malware and screwed up her system and she decided to uninstall the MBAM through Windows uninstaller and she did so. Because she told me that since MBAM was not working she was in no position to anyway asking MBAM to bring back the Quarantined items to their respective original locations to restore her system back (even if it were infected by Malware as claimed by MBAM). But, since MBAM was itself not accessible and not running there was no way she can use it to Restore the originally 6 Files MBAM might have deleted and quarantined when my friend choose "Clean" option. She says that even she couldn't access internet through her Dongle after MBAM had done this damage to her PC under the pretext of "Cleaning". Booting Windows in Safe Mode turned useless. Help File of Windows has also been damaged and is not accessible. Windows Restore is neither accessible through Control Panel. Nor could she run Windows Restore through Command line prompt as guided by Simone who guided as an answer to one of my previous questions to use command prompt Windows Restore. So there is ample chance that Windows Restore .EXE had been damaged. Now, whether this was done before running MBAM by some Malware or MBAM did this Windows Restore Damage is not known. But, she has taken tremendous fear of MBAM. Not only she is cursing me for telling me about this software (as she says that even with whatever malware her PC was running fine till yesterday and I unnecessarily told her about MBAM and she unnecessarily ran a scan using MBAM after downloading it from its official website http://www.malwarebytes.org/ as guided by me.

Now, I think I should have tried out Malwarebytes myself. At least I have original DVD of Microsoft Windows Vista Home Edition.

So the only solution for me is to get her XP repaired. Can it get repaired if I find an installation set of MS Windows XP Professional Edition and tried to install it on her originally installed XP? Or will fresh installation of Windows XP Professional Edition after booting from a DVD result in original settings of her XP to disappear?

Again, is there a website on the net that repairs Window XP Professional. In fact, it would be have been great if Microsoft Corporation itself repaired its various OSes (after verifying that the installed OS is Genuine) from its website itself. This is because I feel that some Malware might have infected her Windows Files and since they were deleted by MBAM while cleaning her Windows XP Professional is not working properly after its boot. I personally feel that if I get a set of Windows XP Professional Edition and install it then perhaps the damaged files will get replaced during the Setup. But, the only thing is perhaps I must boot the system through such a DVD and then install Windows XP Professional Edition. Or perhaps even if I download Windows XP Professional SP 2 or SP3 then also the new SP2 or SP 3 in its installation might replace the damaged files in her system. But, I searched Microsoft's official site but couldn't find a Installer to install SP2 or SP3 of Microsoft Windows XP Professional Edition. I think she has 32 bit MS Windows XP Professional Edition. If you could find the link please provide this in answer.

ok if you like to reinstall OS,I can give some points

clean install-

this is done if you don't care about data in folders like documents,on desktop,in downloads etc,or if you have backed up all those to other drive like D or E ,you will loose softwares you have installed like media players,MS office, antivirus, photoshop, music players etc,so you need to download all these & install unless you have setup files of these, you guys should always have setup files of softwares burnt on dvds or copied to other drives.

clean install will format c drive so you will loose motherboard drivers as well but you can download them later just by typing your laptops model on google.com & going into manufacturers website.

the option you get while installing OS are

1.Format the partition using the NTFS file system

2.Format the partition using the NTFS file system

3.Leave the current file system intact

selecting first two options would format c drive or whichever drive you have selected to install OS,

the 3rd option is for those computers which are not starting because of OS corruption and you need to restore those files from c drive, selecting 'Leave the current file system intact',would install fresh windows on c drive but keeps the old corrupted windows folder as well, you can copy whatever you needed from old windows folder to desktop or document or any other drives & delete the old windows folder just like you delete any other folder.

now if your laptop works & you are able to use it,then move all those datas you need from c drive to any other drive & perform a clean install.

I have tried Repair of Windows many times...and I have never come up with Repair solving the issue.

Repairing Windows will be a waste of time.

Your friend has 3 options to go for...

1. either she adjusts with her damaged PC,

2. Tell her to re-install the XP OS again.

3. You can try using Service Packs...i have answered on your other question also how to use ISO file of service pack...
