My windows update keeps failing - it will check for updates and then fail giving this error:

8007EFE Windows update encountered an unknown error

I have tried everything to fix it - the windows Mr Fixit tool as well as rolling back my computer to an earlier restore point, a fix that deleted ALL of the updates already installed on my computer and other diagnostic tools and nothing has worked - my firewall is not the issue and I am connected to the internet when I check for updates. It still won't update

Please help as the lack of updates keeps causing blue screen failures due to not updating IO features on my hardware!!

Create a new restore point and then try the MSI installer cleanup tool. http://majorgeeks.com/Windows_Installer_CleanUp_Utility_d4459.html

The cleanup tool has been taken out of development by Microsoft because of rare issues but if you have tried everything else give it a try. It still works for many people although I can't be certain it will be helpful for Windows Updates. I think it is worth a try.

If you reformatted but had the System Recovery save your files, it may also have saved the existing Windows Updates files -- even though the programs it put on the hard disk were prior to those updates. When Automatic Updates goes around taking an inventory, it finds these files and thinks they've been installed when, in truth, they're not active. In other words, a System Recovery that saves files makes Windows think it has updates it really doesn't. This is a terrible gotcha! that hit me about four years ago when I had to do a System Recovery. I managed to get the right updates re-installed, but it took a lot of work and manual downloading and installing of patches. In your case, one of those ghost updates may be needed for the installer to install the ones that failed. Good luck sorting this out.

I have never en-counted the 8007EFE caption. But somethings drastically wrong here. Could your computer be infected with a virus, or a trojan? You've tried most possible solutions, so what next?

Maybe you'll have to take to the repair shop, for an expert to have a look at it. Someone earlier in the week asked the same question of updates not installing.

Doing the System Restore usually solves a lot of hassles, and can and does get you out of a lot of trouble. It does me. Your computer is corrupted in some way, and you won't be able to solve it, I doubt. I assume you used the help option.

This problem may occur if an update installation was unsuccessful. For example, while updating, due to power cut, the computer was unexpectedly shut down, or the user canceled the problem in middle with the help of Task Manager, or like that.

This causes to store incomplete information in the registry and thereby error may occur the next time you run Windows Update utility. Downloading a registry cleaner and fixing all the broken entries in your registry may solve your problem. Download Reginout, a registry cleaning tool.

Get it repaired don't use anything from sites such as major geeks. It will make the computer worse overtime. You need to do a factory restore.
