Windows Movie Maker error(commonly asked question - can't add audio)?

Question

I know this question has been asked before,but I need further information.
You know the drill,whenever you try to add audio to the timeline you get an error saying that the video can't be longer than 24 hours,and that you need to shorten the audio(even though the song lasts for,say,THREE MINUTES).
On most of the questions like this one that I browsed through,they were told to download WMM 2.6 - However,I think it sucks balls. I've been using the "old" Movie Maker for about two years now,and I disagree with what people say about it being so good and easier to use. I hate getting used to new things. Also,most of my projects crashed when I tried to use it.

So back to the old WMM,I need to know what I could do to fix this problem? I still want to use it,but when none of the songs are available then it's pretty pointless. Is there some sort of program I should download to convert or shorten the songs(even by just a second) so that they'll work?
I need to know ASAP!

...But don't waste your time answering if you don't know what I'm even talking about. That's just sad.
