Why can't I play AVI files anymore? Windows Media Player opens but then immediately closes.?

I am on Windows XP. I tried using the newest version of Windows Media Player and Windows Media Player classic but AVI files still won't open. I downloaded and installed the DIVX codecs but the problem still remains. I used to play AVI files without a problem until today. I ran SPYBOT today and I'm wondering if that had anything to do with my problem. HELP!
