Ok, I have this .shw file for a class that I need to be able to open and edit. But, I don't want to buy the $230 corel program. I tried opening this file with windows explorer's defaults, with powerpoint, with VLC player, and as a webpage. None of that has worked. There is always an error. Is there an open source program i can download that will open it? can i use what i already have with windows 7 and office 2010? Thanks for all the help.

File Extension SHW is a slideshow/presentation/show file format. In Windows 7 follow these steps to show file format:

GO to start menu > open control panel > open folder options > select view tab > uncheck hide extensions for known file types > click OK > Save.

.SHW file extension are for slide shows created by Corel presentation, is a component of the WordPerfect Office suite.

Corel presentation and WordPerfect Office software application both are not free and you need to but, you can try the trial version if available. They are very handy tool for creating effective and in-depth presentations with lots of options for setting font, color, background, slide, text slides, charts, graphs. Scan your PC for registry error if you are not able to open in Windows.

The file extension .shw contains media, images, and text that can be exported to a PPT format type or self executing file type; .shw file extension using software application graphic program Corel is associated to Microsoft PowerPoint and OpenOffice.org’s Impress and this helps share code with WordPerfect.

Corel doesn't support Word Perfect on the Mac anymore. You'll have to get to a Windows machine and then translate it. Pages may have a translation option in it, but I'm not sure. Corel is hardly used anymore thanks to MS crushing it. I find it a great pity they stopped supporting the Mac as they would now have a fairly large following I suspect. They always had a better system than Microsoft with Word Perfect, the the fact that MS is still cross compatible makes them very nice these days.
