My daughter's computer is running Windows Vista and recently has seemed to be sluggish and constipated :) I am only familiar with Windows XP and how to manually delete my (Local Settings) temp files and WINDOWS temp files in that programme. I discovered via gingerly going into her 'explore' that her computer has several thousand files in her (Local) WINDOWS Temp folder. I went ahead and deleted most of the 4.000 odd files in her TEMP folder. But Im quite worried about doing that in unfamiliar terrority and I am apprehensive about attempting to delete the 5,000 odd files I have discovered in her WINDOWS TEMP folder. Can I delete these safely in Windows Vista in a similar way that I have been able to in my XP Windows Temp folder? I am not very computer savvy and dont want to make matters worse fidding around with something I am unfamiliar with. Can anyone give me some good 'safe' advice?

download CCleaner

run it.

It's free, legal, extremely effficient, world renowned

P.S. the people who are giving me thumbs down are absolutely retarded

CCleaner is an amazing program for cleaning out junk like temp folders and anything of the sort. You are not comp savvy and you dont want to mess with folders you dont know about. I completely understand. CCleaner works with 1 click of a button. TRY IT

To the other posters below me. You can do what they say. It works, mostly. Or you can click 1 button and do everything they say and more...ugh. Good luck.

Yes you can safely delete them in Windows\temp and the normally hidden local settings one

To access that one quicker just type

%temp%

in the Run box and a window should open with all the hidden by default user temp files - delete the lot

You'll probably get a 'file in use' error from some, which will mostly be daily temp files from one or more of your security programs. Leave those and delete the rest. You might also have trouble in finding which file is in use, because it just names the file, not the folder it could be in.

Having done all that, I doubt if it will improve anything though, unless you were very close to running out of hard drive space.

The problem lies elsewhere IMO - too many programs running at startup, an infection that has never been fixed, or a combination of both seems the most likely cause(s)

You may actually use every version. But the chances are, downloading the latest version will take longer and it may even error out. Try version 8. That is smaller and faster.
